Trifarious brings together the like-minded forces of Tim Redpath (clarinet/bass clarinet/soprano saxophone), Rachel Calaminus (violin/viola) and Nadine André (piano), amalgamating classical, jazz and world influences into this diverse instrumental combination. Breaking away from the standard trio format through its diversity of instrumentation, Trifarious sets out to broaden the spectrum of the trio genre. The five sound worlds of clarinet, saxophone, violin, viola & piano are all at the disposal of both performer and composer.
In its inaugural year, Trifarious secured works by two of the country’s leading musician/composers. A four movement concertante by renowned jazz saxophonist and composer Barbara Thompson MBE, and a new work by Andy Scott (2006 British Composers Award winner) along with a reworking of his acclaimed guitar quartets.
Projects for 2016/17 include commissions from Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Stephen Goss and Edmund Jolliffe, along with a new forty-minute work by Barbara Thompson. Trifarious’ eagerly awaited debut CD ‘Russian Roulette’ featuring works by Thompson, Scott and Brady was released in June 2015. The ensemble is currently hosting workshops and masterclasses with both student performers and composers at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
Trifarious has set out to become synonymous with new and forward thinking music and its promotion through both performance and education – collaborating with established composers as well as the new generation of young composers.
Tim Redpath is highly respected as both clarinetist and saxophonist, and has been at the forefront of contemporary chamber music for almost thirty years. He has performed and collaborated with some of the most exciting and eclectic musicians around. These include Apollo Saxophone Quartet, London Saxophonic (touring and recording extensively with Michael Nyman and Moondog (Louis Hardin)), Moondog Big Band, Andy Scott’s Sax Assault & Bob Mintzer, Barbara Thompson, Joanna Macgregor, Django Bates and Iain Ballamy. He has broadcast extensively on BBC television, BBC Radio 2, 3 & 4, Classic FM and has featured on over twenty CD albums. He has been guest principal clarinet and saxophonist with many of the UK’s leading orchestras including Opera North, BBC Philharmonic, Hallé, BBC Scottish, RTE and Philharmonia. As founder member and soprano saxophonist with the highly acclaimed Apollo Saxophone Quartet for 23 years (1985 – 2008), Tim has amassed a large collection of awards including winner of the Tokyo International Chamber Music Competition (plus the Lufthansa Outstanding Performance Award), Countess of Munster Trust, Royal Overseas League and Tunnell Trust.
From the London Mozart Players to Don Weller, throughout her extensive performing career Rachel Calaminus has demonstrated her ability to perform in all music genres. In great demand as both violin and viola player she leads a busy performing schedule and works with many of the UK’s leading orchestras and ensembles including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Royal Ballet Sinfonia. She has featured on countless recordings spanning across the whole musical spectrum including classical, jazz, world and popular music.
Throughout her life, Nadine André’s versatility as a musician has enabled her to perform on international platforms in many different capacities. A personal invitation from Paolo Fazioli to demonstrate his pianos at the MusikMesse in Frankfurt, Germany, led to a solo recital at St. James’s, Piccadilly in 2010. As winner of the National Piano Competition in north London at the age of 17, Nadine went on to receive 3 rd prize in the International Anglo Czech-Slovak Competition in 2007 and has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician at the Royal Festival Hall, The Forge, Steinway Hall London, and Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. Nadine has recorded for Optimum Television Ltd and Temple Music Studios, and performed as an orchestral pianist with the London Chamber Orchestra and the Bushey Symphony Orchestra. Also in demand as teacher and chamber coach, Nadine teaches at the Junior department of the Royal Academy of Music in London and is the co-founder of the Natural Music Centre with her husband, Paul Cavaciuti. As one half of The Cavaciuti Duo, Nadine regularly plays ragtime and jazz in care-homes and community centres across Surrey and runs a regular concert series in south London called Classical Babies. Nadine loves to play to audiences of all kinds in many diverse settings, from house concerts to concert halls, and currently enjoys working directly with composers on their new compositions, and further exploring the world of jazz.
