Tango 5 (www.tango5.co.uk) brings together some of the finest musicians in England alongside internationally acclaimed bandoneon player Santiago Cimadevilla to play music written for Tango Quintet and particularly that of Astor Piazzolla. Their collective experience of performing to the highest level and a passion for Tango creates a freshness and spontaneity to bring the music alive.
Bandoneon – Santiago Cimadevilla was born in Buenos Aires and from a young age performed in several bands as a guitarist before studying classical piano at the Consevatorio Municipal Manuel de Falla. Having moved to the Netherlands in 1999, he
taught himself the bandoneon and later studied at the Rotterdam Consevatory. He is currently a member of Flautango and the tango quintet Racing Club Tango with whom he performs across Europe as well as appearing as guest soloist with numerous orchestras.
Guitar – Tom McKinney was born in Stoke-on-Trent and studied at the Royal Northern College of Music with Craig Ogden. He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician
at most of Britain's major festivals, appearing with many of this country's leading ensembles and orchestras. Recent highlights have included two sell-out concerto performances at Aldeburgh Festival with the Britten Sinfonia, a concerto tour in Belgium with the Chamber Orchestra of Bruges, a solo recital at the first London Contemporary Music Festival, and a recording of new music for solo guitar released on the experimental music label Slip Disc.A regular voice on BBC Radio 3, Tom guest presents Weekend Breakfast from Salford, live concerts throughout the UK, and has written and presented numerous Saturday Features.
Piano – Peter Lawson has appeared as soloist with orchestra, in recital or for the radio throughout the UK and in Europe, Japan and Russia. With a repertoire stretching from the baroque to contemporary jazz, his many commercial recordings include Satie (for EMI and awarded a Silver Disc), American Sonatas (Virgin Classics) and Michael Nyman's Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He works regularly with the Equivox Trio, is a senior tutor in piano at both Chetham's School of Music and the RNCM and is an examiner for the Associated Board.
Violin – David Routledge chose the diversity of a freelance career and juggles his commitments between a number of ensembles. He is currently a member and guest leader of Manchester Camerata, Sinfonia Viva and the Northern Chamber Orchestra. For fifteen years he was leader of the highly acclaimed contemporary music group, Psappha and has appeared at most of the major UK festivals including Cheltenham, Aldeburgh and the BBC Proms and made numerous broadcasts and recordings as chamber musician and soloist. David can often be seen in the violin sections of the northwests symphony orchestras frequently playing as guest principal and most recently leading the orchestra of Welsh National Opera.
Double Bass – James Manson has been principal bass of the Northern Chamber Orchestra since 1989 and is a regular guest principal in chamber orchestras throughout the UK. Freelance life throws up many diverse engagements, such as collaborating with the poet John Hegley, playing for West End shows or performing backing tracks for hip hop artists. James is also busy as a composer and arranger having written musicals for children, music for BBC radio, and many arrangements for a variety of orchestras and ensembles.
